Playsuit progress

Hello all!
Most of the weekend was spent doing test runs on the pattern for the SewForVictory sew-along.
And fondling the lobsters...

Ever since I decided on the Wearing History  Sailor Girl pattern, I was actually having some doubts as to whether or not it was such a good idea. I mean, I LOVE the high waisted look on every single one I see wearing it, but I DO remember how I felt with regards to my WWII Overalls. I am really not sure it is very flattering on flat bottoms and narrow hips, like those I am blessed with :)

So, I decided to make a (proper) muslin of the shorts to test for fit (which I didn't bother to with the overall), and if I felt awful, those lobsters would not be turned into something that would be stuffed in some Pile of Shame! They deserve to be worn, and if not playsuit, than definitely DRESS :)

Anyways, here's the result:

Please PLEASE disregard the fabric; my mother will no doubt recognize them as her faded bedroom curtains from the early 90s (Thanks, Mom!). And no, I will not be wearing this item of clothing. But nevertheless, they have filled an important purpose, and will pass over to my "there-will-be-a-quilt-pile".

And you know, I don't think they look that bad. Fit wise. They sort of look like a little skirt, and are very comfortable. The pattern was great, and this is straight out of the envelope, no alterations! I even feel it gives me some shape (whereas the overalls just made me look like a board)! Mr P even approved slightly, and he HATES high waisted styles, so I think I will go for it. I really like the side buttoning on both sides, it gives a lovely close fit and some nice detailing.

If anyone thinks these should not be, speak now, or forever keep your mouth shut hold your peace :)
(No, seriously; tell me what you think!)

  1. What seam allowance did you use? I started sewing the skirt from that pattern last night and couldn't find the seam allowance to save my life. The shorts look fabulous on you. I'm planning on starting them soon, although if they're working for your figure, we'll see how they look on my NOT flat butt and NOT narrow hips :)

    1. Thanks Erin!
On the first page of any of the garments pattern-pages (the ones you tape together), it states that 1/2" seam allowance is included, so I used that :)
I am sure the shorts will look great on you too! It is roomy, so I am sure it can accommodate "larger assets" as well. You just need to get it fitted at the waist :) Looking forward to see your version!

    2. I bought it pre-printed not digital so there was no taping for me. Can't wait to see your finished shorts too!

I feel much better about these. The overalls lives at the back of my closet...they make me sad :/ But I am thankful for the learning experience!

  3. The fit looks spot-on, it's great when you get a pattern that doesn't need altering. I will get this pattern myself at some point as It looks so flattering.
I agree that the curtain material should be relegated to the quilt pile!:)

I can only recommend this pattern, and I think it is very versatile. And yes, flattering!

  4. They look really good on you- the cut is very flattering, giving you the back to butt curve. The fact that they look a bit flirty skirty is another top feature.as far as I'm concerned. Bring on the lobsters, that's what I say!

  6. The fit is very classic and becoming. I love that they're not bottom grazing length like so many shorts you see these days. I'm no prude, but I'm not keen on seeing someone's underwear in the same eyeful as their shorts hem. The trio of buttons up the side on these are really cute and fun (and remind me of one of my pairs of Freddies jeans which also has buttons on one side like that).

Big hugs & many thanks for your great comment on today's outfit post (I'm sorry that you're not able to wear heels very often any more; Miss L Fire has some charming flat styles, too, including a wonderfully lovely ballet flat with ankle straps in their S/S '14 collection, perhaps one or more of those would be a good fit for you, honey),

Yes, there certainly are cute shoes with little to no heel as well, but I really like the va-voom of tall heels... Oh well, that's getting old I suppose ;)
