My Victory Jumper!

Hello all!

So, everyday life is back on the menu again, after the blissful Easter break. Work was same old. Dusty, greasy and loud. As cable factories are, I suppose. But nevermind that!
I can finally share my Victory jumper with you all. Behold!

I finished this one two weeks ago now, but quickly realised I would need to sew a pair of pants to go with it, as it ended up shortish. At least with my RTW jeans, which for the most part are low to medium rise (hate those pants!).

Then I fell in to the whole Colette Ceylon vortex, and I forgot all about both pants and jumper. I finally sewed the pants this weekend, but I am saving those for another post :)

Talking on my imaginary phone...

So let's focus on the jumper, shall we?
I used an alpacca/peruvian wool blend yarn, super soft and not at all itchy. The pattern is of course the infamous Victory jumper from 1945, released in celebration of the end of WW2. It is written for a 34" bust, and a quick calculation showed it was easily graded up just by adding some more of the 9-stitch repeats. Easypeasy!

Get pattern here!

I obviously changed the colors. The original is navy, red and white, the colors of the Union Jack. The Norwegian flag sports the same colors, but I wanted it a little less patriotic. Maybe I'll do another one in red white and blue, as it is rather striking! Ah, the choices :)

The lovely waves magically appeared as the knit grew, the feather and fan pattern with it's increases and decreases does that. So all I had to remember was to change the color now and then. Despite using no 3 needles (2.5 for the ribbing), it was quite quick to knit. It made up nicely, too.
I did knit the neckband all in one after assembly, instead of separate for back and front as the pattern suggests, I think it is easier to get it nice-looking that way.

I did mention that it is a tad short. It looks fine in the photos, but I am dependant on some high waisted trousers, and I am still debating whether that is a good look for me. So a longer jumper would solve that conundrum, or maybe just wear it with a skirt. In any event, I love how the jumper turned out, and I would love another one!

Knitting is kind of a winter activity for me, so we'll see if the needles get shelved!
How about you?

  1. I love this! The colors are just fabulous! I miss knitting myself, its so warm here in Florida that I rarely break out my needles anymore.

    1. Thank you Rebecca! Yes, I see what you mean. I detest knitting in the heat! Maybe it would help knitting with cotton..? I don't know, should try though :)

  3. I love it! I have been knitting some fair isle mittens today and it is surprisingly warm in the UK so I don't think I'll be wearing them anytime soon. I think your jumper would look great with a skirt and I'm sure you'll get lots of wear out of it. :)

It seems spring is on the way here too, nice temps these last few days, and the birds have started singing in the mornings, yay! I do have some more lovely jumper patterns, so I might knit some more before summer hits :)

  5. So cute - I like the colours you picked. We're getting colder in the southern hemisphere (first morning it feels like autumn today). Thinking about knitting my first sweater!

  6. This is really lovely! I'm really bad at knitting consistently, I go through phases and then I don't pick my needles up for months - probably in the Summer, I think you're right, it feels like more of a Winter activity somehow.

  8. So beautiful !! Certainly this jumper look beautiful with any mix of colors. Your color palette is fantastic. I think it look great with skirts, maybe you sew some jeans high waist so comfortable, I also hate pants at the hip, they are unattractive.
