Victory lobsters are in da house!!

Phew! That was quick!

I ordered this lobster print for the Sew for Victory 2.0 just last Friday, and yesterday they were here!
Although  I had sworn to stay away from Ebay, it was the only option I could find that had it in Europe. Sure there were other lobsters around, but you know how it is when you want THOSE ones...

I was also sure I had made a giant mistake when I (after ordering) went to check the sellers feedback. There were lots of issues with items not turning up, and people getting the wrong fabric. And it was recent too. Over 30 cases in March alone. The seller seemed ok to me and answered promptly to my requests, so I had my fingers crossed that it would be ok.

And here they are!!!!!

I was a bit surprised the fabric was this light. You can see it is a bit sheer even, as the print shows through. I find fabric descriptions difficult, because I don't really know what is which. The ad just stated 100% cotton, and to be honest any more info would probably just confuse me. I really need a fabric encyclopedia/ dictionary! But anyways, this fabric is a bit light for shorts. I probably should have gotten twill or canvas, or heavier cotton, but there were no options for different types of cotton fabric. I wonder if I can underline it with plain white cotton? Has anyone got any tips?
I'd really appreciate your input :)

Light or not, I am still in love with the little guys, and I hope I will not ruin the fabric by sewing the wrong garment. It is awesome sun dress material, but that's not what I am making, sadly... (maybe I should get some more...?!?)

I am in any case making a mock up of the shorts for fit in some other fabric, and make a final decision about it later.

I have already sewn most of the shirt up now, the Wearing History Sailor girl play suit pattern is lovely so far.
This is looking to be a fun project, and I can't wait to see it take shape!

How is YOUR victory sewing coming along?

  3. Love the fabric, I am not sure how to make it work for shorts besides underlining it.
I have finally decided on a pattern and it should be here in a week. Looking into fabric now.
Yours is going to be so perfect for summer.

    1. Thanks, Jennifer :)

Ah looking for fabric....my favorite part! :D
What pattern will you do?? The next best part with sew-alongs is getting to see all the fabulous patterns that people come up with. And of course the best part is seeing them all come to life in the final parade!

  4. I'm looking forward to I seeing your outfit made up as I've been fancying this pattern for a while. I have underlined a see-through cotton when I made a dress. I wasn't quite sure what I was doing so used a white polycotton just to experiment and it turned out very nice. There's no fuss with underlining as once you've attached it to your fabric you sew the pattern as normal. You probably only need to underline the shorts.
Good luck and I'm looking forward to seeing the results:)

    1. I love the fact that it's a three piece pattern. I thought it was a "one-piece" play suit, but now I have three new patterns to mix and match with other things in my stash :)
I am kind of glad the fabric turned out being different than my "fantasies". It means I will have to try out and learn new skills. Will only do it with the shorts, as it is not really sheerness that bothers me, but more how it will behave. It needs to have a bit more structure and weight. I think I am just as excited as you are!

  5. It's such a great fabric! I always get a bit nervous when i buy something from ebay or etsy. I thought lladybird has a tutorial about underlining and i remember that gertie also has blogged about the subject.

My dress is almost finished, but i'm having a little break due to some personal circumstances. Next week i hope to be back on track!

    1. Oh, thanks for the tip. I need to sniff up those posts :)
Your dress has the look of Awesome, but you're well ahead of schedule so relax and have a well earned break! The SFV parade will be fabulous this year :D

  6. I see you have also received a present through the post like me! I think underlining it in a plain white cotton or polycotton would be fine. As you are making a mock up would it be possible to find similar weight fabrics and have a go to see what you think? Personally I think it will look amazing. :)

    1. That is a very good idea, I'll have a rummage through my stash :) It really isn't the sheerness that bothers me, but having the shorts look floppy and feeling like a handkerchief :)

  7. That is going to be one gorgeous playsuit! I'd vote for underlining it if it feels a bit light or sheer. That's worked beautifully for me on past projects. (Although you're right - it would also make a fabulous sundress!)
