Victorious planning!

Hello all!

Since my last post I have been hard at work with my Sew for Victory preparations.
In an older post I mentioned briefly wanting to make a 40s cropped lumber  jacket to go with my pleated corduroy skirt (amongst other things).

Last year Tasha made this lovely jacket for the Victory-challenge, and ever since I have been looking for a nice pattern for a similar jacket. Original patterns seems hard to come by in a "normal" bust size, so when I found a downloadable copy version I thought it would be ok.

The offending pattern..

When my printer started spitting out the pages, I immediately felt a tad turned off by it's wonky hand drawn lines and inaccurate markings. Taping the sheets together took most of last Saturday evening, and a considerable amount of foul language. When I finally had the thing taped up to the best of my ability, I found a gauge square in the sewing instructions, and instead of being 10x10cm it was 9,3x9,3cm. So it meant the jacket was NOT my size after all. I was in no mood to grade up the whole thing and draft the pattern from scratch. Instead I clawed down a note to the Etsy seller, and tossed the pattern in my "angry pile".

I am still unsure if I will muster the courage to work with the pattern for the sew-along, so I ordered the Sailor girl playsuit pattern from Wearing History as a back up. Since last summer I have wanted to make a playsuit and after dabbling with it in my mind, I feel maybe this is the time to make it.

Although I absolutely adore the traditional nautical version of white and navy, I think I will do it with a twist.
The pattern consists of three separate pieces (shirt, shorts and skirt), so it perfect for mix and match in your wardrobe. Lets just say that the inspiration from the sea is still very much present......!

Aren't they awesome??!!?

Yes yes, I know they are "whimsy overload", but hey; there's been enough seriousness to last me the rest of the year! Beside; spring is here!!!!! Look!

Yeeeeessss! NO snow!

Right! Time for a run :D

  1. Too bad the lumber pattern didn't work out. But I do love the playsuit, it's a great alternative!

  3. Did you check if your printer was set at 100% (original size) when you printed the pattern? That might be the problem! I have the original pattern and hope to make it for Sew for Victory as well!

    1. I wish it was Renée, but sadly I had all the right settings... This is the first time I have had any issues with a downloadable. They have always been good to me ;)

  4. It's too bad because the pattern has so much promise. I know when I print on my silly printer I have to adjust it to 105% (weird right?) for it to come out the correct size. I usually just print the page with the test square over and over again until I find it printing right.
However, the sailor pattern is so cute and the lobster print looks like a winner! Good luck !

    1. Well, I guess I could fiddle around with the settings and make it work, but I'm spoiled with the lovely Wearing History patterns. Everything to scale and proper lines and markings making it a breeze :) I WILL make the jacket, but need to get my mojo on first. In the meantime I am happy to make me a Sailor girl outfit! Woopee ;D

  6. Cute pattern and fabric. I have had good and bad experiences with print at home patterns all of them creating the need for wine. Maybe you can figure it out when you are in the mood to sew it. Go with what you love right now.

  7. How frustrating after all that work, and cost with paper, print etc. Never mind the Sailor Suit is a great alternative, I was looking at these designs myself, it's a fab website and there is a discount at the moment to coincide with the sew for victory challenge. I can't wait to see your version and your fabric is brilliant!
You will do an excellent job I'm sure!

    1. I know!! When you start a project, you just wanna sew, not fiddle with printer settings and trying to connect the dots on 28 sheets of paper...
WH patterns are very professional and I love them!

  8. That's a shame that the jacket didn't work out, but that playsuit is beyond cute! I loved doing the sew for victory challenge last year, but truly can't make the time for it this time around - I'll just have to enjoy your posts instead!

  9. Fantastisk hummerstoff!
